HCBA Chairman Ross Clifton took his first match of the season last Thursday against his own county of Sussex at his own club, Bexhill Bowling Club.

A glorious day – blue cloudless sky and a gentle breeze – in other words a perfect day for a bowls match greeted the players.

The withdrawal of the Royal County of Berkshire a few days before the match presented a minor hitch which was quickly resolved with a rink from Seaford BC taking their place.

A more serious problem which could have marred the day was the non-appearance of the rink from the county of Buckinghamshire, but thankfully this was overcome by four members from the Bexhill club standing in for them literally at the last minute.
Unfortunately for the Chairman his HCBA team came second with the County side taking the game 146-124.
Oxfordshire, who themselves had a couple of players drop out a week before the game, rallied up a HCBA highest winning rink of County Secretary Steve Tolhurst along with the Banbury Borough trio of Bernard Hole, Alan Wase and skip Mick Morris who won 22-13. A fitting reward for their 320 mile round trip. How's that for dedication.
